A Short History of the Daily Prophet

The Daily Prophet was founded in 1612 and is the oldest surviving wizarding paper in Britain and Ireland. It is not the oldest continuously operating newspaper in the world, that is the International Wizarding Times, set up in the German town of Baden Baden in 1342. The IWT switched to English in 1643, after moving its headquarters to Paris in 1378, which means the Daily Prophet is the oldest continously operating newspaper in English.

Of course, in those days print copies of the Daily Prophet were produced on a double-sided roll of parchment, copied by wand (as they are today), and like other wizarding papers the Daily Prophet did not switch to a Muggle brochure (broadsheet) format until 1854, when Muggle newspapers became commonplace.

Since its inception the Daily Prophet has been a significant voice for the wizarding community. As its editor, Barnabas Cuffe said a few years ago, "We may not sell as many copies as Die Post Wizardum, but we have a reputation for accurate and timely reporting which makes us the most read newspaper among officials and envoys worldwide."

Indeed the Daily Prophet prides itself on its topical coverage of international wizarding affairs, and is also known for its robust domestic Ministry reports in Britain. The post of Special Correspondent at the Daily Prophet, occupied in the past by some of the best minds in the journalistic field and largely held by Rita Skeeter for the last 25 years, covers both these key topics and is an important mainstay of news for its readers.

With over 50 staff, it is also one of the biggest employers in the English wizarding community.
